If you have read our guide on the Top Wedding Venues in Essex, you know that we have a soft spot for venues that offer something visually unique.
Layer Marney Tower isn’t just unique; it is a statement. Standing tall near Colchester, it is the tallest Tudor Gatehouse in England. But don’t let the grandeur fool you this isn’t a stuffy museum where you’re afraid to touch the walls. It’s a warm, welcoming, and incredibly romantic setting that feels less like a fortress and more like a home.
You may have seen Layer Marney Tower Four in a Bed on Channel 4, where you can see some of the historic views.
Having shot weddings here, including Jo & Sam’s wonderful celebration, We’ve learned a few secrets about how to get the best out of this venue. Here is our “photographer’s eye” view of Layer Marney Tower.
The “Unfinished Masterpiece”
There is a beautiful bit of history here that we love sharing with couples. The Tower was built in the 1520s to rival Hampton Court Palace, but it was never actually finished.
To me, that’s the perfect metaphor for a wedding day. The building isn’t a static relic of the past; it’s an “unfinished masterpiece” that has been evolving for 500 years. It’s a living structure, inviting you to write the next chapter of its history. It sets a tone that is grand but open-ended perfect for a marriage.
Why I Love Shooting Here: The “Terracotta Glow”
As a photographer, light is everything. Many castles are built from grey stone, which can look cold and “muddy” on an overcast British day.
Layer Marney is built from terracotta brick (warm, orange-red clay). Why does this matter for your photos? Because that warm brick acts as a giant natural reflector. Even in the middle of winter, the walls bounce a lovely, warm light onto your skin tones. It naturally makes everyone look healthier and more radiant.
The Spaces: A Flow That Works
One of the reasons Jo & Sam’s wedding flowed so well was how the venue utilises different spaces for different parts of the day.
1. The Ceremony: The Corsellis Room
This room has a serious “wow” factor with its ancient oak timbers and mulberry wall hangings.
Photo Tip: It has a nice long aisle, giving me plenty of time to capture the emotions as you walk in.
Accessibility: Unlike many ancient towers, there is a lift! This is a huge win for elderly grandparents who want to attend the ceremony without tackling a spiral staircase.
2. The Reception: The Long Gallery
This used to be the Tudor stables, but you’d never know it. It’s long, panelled in oak, and crucially, filled with light.
Winter Weddings: If you are planning a winter wedding, this room comes alive with roaring fires. It creates a cozy, intimate atmosphere that looks incredible on camera think candle vibes and warm laughter.
3. The Party: The Essex Barn
For the evening, you move over to the converted Essex Barn. This separation is great because it means your band or DJ can set up without disturbing the dinner. It has a more rustic, “festival” vibe that contrasts perfectly with the grandeur of the main tower.
My Top Tips for Layer Marney Couples
Having shot here before, here is some practical advice to help your day run smoothly:
1. The Golden Hour Advantage
Layer Marney Tower faces west toward the Blackwater Estuary. This means we often get a spectacular sunset right behind the gatehouse.
The Strategy: I usually suggest slipping away for 15 minutes just before sunset. We can get those dramatic silhouettes of you both against the massive profile of the Tower.
2. Climb to the Top (If You Can!)
If you are up for a bit of an adventure (and your shoes allow for it), I highly recommend taking the trip to the top of the tower. It involves tackling the winding spiral staircase, but the reward is absolutely worth the effort. The panoramic views over the Blackwater Estuary and the Essex countryside are unmatched. It also gives us a chance to get a unique “bird’s eye view” photo looking down on your guests mingling in the gardens below, a perspective you just can’t get anywhere else.
The Vibe: Grand, Not Stiff
The most important thing to remember about Layer Marney is that you don’t need to match the stiffness of the architecture. The building is grand so that you don’t have to be.
My approach here is exactly the same as always: relaxed, documentary, and real. Let the building provide the epic backdrop, and you just focus on enjoying the party. Whether it’s a summer day on the lawns or a cozy winter evening by the fire, this unfinished palace is the perfect place to start your story.

FAQs
Is the venue dog-friendly?
Generally, yes! Layer Marney is often happy for your dog to be part of the ceremony and the drinks reception in the grounds. It’s always best to double-check the specifics with the wedding team.
Is there accommodation on-site for guests?
Yes, but it’s a bit different from a standard hotel! There is the beautiful De Zoete Suite included for the couple. For guests, there is a “glamping” option with luxury encampments in the grounds (available April-October). For those who prefer a hotel room, the venue partners with The Marks Tey Hotel nearby and offers a discount code for wedding guests.
Can we have confetti at Layer Marney Tower?
Yes, you absolutely can! The venue asks that you use real, dried flower petals rather than paper or foil to protect the grounds. From a photography perspective, dried petals actually flutter slower than paper, which gives me a better chance to capture that perfect “confetti storm” shot. The path leading from the Gatehouse into the gardens is the classic spot for this.
