Tudor Towers, Vintage Buses, and Backyard Pizza Parties
What a vibrant, sunny day this was in Essex! The excitement was palpable from the minute we started, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.
As usual, Emma and I divided and conquered to capture the morning build-up. Emma was with the bride and bridesmaids at home, capturing all those fluttery nerves and excitement. Meanwhile, I started my day at the Marlborough Head Inn in Dedham with the groom and his groomsmen. There was such a great buzz of anticipation in the air!
I actually hitched a ride to the venue with the groom, which was a great chance to chat and scout out the location as we arrived.
A majestic backdrop & A Cool Commute
The ceremony took place at Layer Marney Tower near Colchester. It is a breathtaking spot with so much history. While I was snapping candid shots of the guys mingling, Emma captured one of the coolest transport moments we’ve seen: the bridal party arriving on a vintage double-decker red bus… driven by none other than the groom’s mum! How fun is that?
The ceremony room itself was a photographer’s dream. Natural light was pouring in through the windows, creating the perfect soft glow for the vows. It was a short ceremony, but sweet, joyful, and filled with love.
The Climb (Literally!)
After the “I do’s,” we headed into the gardens for family group shots in the glorious sunshine. Then, we decided to get adventurous. We scaled the tower for some couple portraits. I won’t lie—those steps were a bit of a workout! But once we reached the top? Totally worth it. The views were incredible, and the photos we got up there were some of our favorites of the day.
Pizza and Parties at Home
For the reception, the vibe shifted from grand history to intimate fun. We headed back to the couple’s house for a delightful garden party.
It was the definition of relaxed. There was a marquee on the lawn buzzing with laughter during the speeches, and a “hidden” garden bar keeping the drinks flowing. Food-wise, they nailed it with a pizza van serving up delicious mini pizzas—honestly, the perfect way to keep guests fueled for the dance floor. It was a celebration brimming with warmth, and exactly what Essex wedding memories are made of.

Layer Marney Tower
Layer Marney, Colchester, Essex, CO5 9US
This venue is an incomplete early Tudor country house dating back to around 1523, and it offers a stunning backdrop. Here are a few tips if you are planning your wedding here:
Embrace the History: Consider incorporating a little time for guests (or just the two of you!) to explore the grounds. The architecture is rich and makes for very dramatic photos.
- The Climb: As we mentioned, the tower offers amazing views, but be prepared for the steps! It’s a great spot for couple portraits if you are up for a little adventure.
Local Flavour: To enhance the experience, look for local caterers who specialise in seasonal ingredients. It matches the “English Country Garden” vibe of the venue perfectly.
